Amateur 3D Artist / Designer / Modeler / Composer
Espoo, Finland

Summary

I'm a self-taught Finnish amateur 3D artist / modeler with a natural sciences / ICT background. Otherwise I'm a generally curious person with a selection of different creative hobbies dating all the way back to the 1980's.

A fairly recent idea of creating an animated music video for my own music started a chain reaction that finally lead me to creating this profile at ArtStation as well. While I guess not many would hire me yet with my current level of expertise, I'm open to possible job or project offers, as 3D modeling and related things are something I might want to do professionally as well in the future.

I've been interested in pictures, shapes and spaces for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I practiced drawing etc. quite a lot, and had a passionate period of 3D modeling using excess cardboard, tape and packaging plastics. Later on (in the 90's) I tried different graphics programs in the PC environment, creating some drawings, a few quite complicated (at the time) 3D models written as text files for the POV-Ray renderer, and quite a lot of different kinds of program code, including games, and some 3D engines written in assembly language for the 80x86 processor line.

Since late 1990's I had a long pause from doing basically any artwork myself, but in May 2016 I decided to revive my old passions and start to actively learning something new on that front. This resulted in me trying the free and open source Blender 3D modeling suite together with the fairly recent Cycles rendering engine, and while it took me a few months to really get started (after my initial, only partially successful animation trial I had a complete pause of over four months), I've been modeling actively since late October 2016, and all the artwork presented here in my portfolio (excluding one piece of work from May) is from this recent period.

My choice of Blender as selected 3D modeling software is mostly economical: as an amateur, and as a job seeker, I simply can't pay high prices for software licenses just to learn something. Blender+Cycles is quite a potent combination by itself and you can learn the most important basics using it, so I don't have so many other reasons to switch to other software products than potential employment by a company where those other products are used. That said, I've got nothing against learning other 3D suites like Maya, 3DS Max, SolidWorks and/or combinations like Substance Painter+Designer as well, provided I have the necessary licenses to do that. In any case, I do like Blender and open source, and might want to contribute to the community in a way or another.

I'm interested in both realistic and surrealistic settings and narratives, and on the technical side, physically based rendering, physical simulation, scripting graphics by code and 3D printing are pretty much at the top of my list. But of course this can change - time will tell. What comes to the subjects I like to portray, weapons and violent / dark themes are not really my thing, and I'm even somewhat drawn towards "naivistic" styles.

I've sorted the projects in the portfolio by starting date, so the latest should be shown at the top, and the oldest at the bottom. This will give some kind of idea of my progress as a 3D artist from May / October 2016 to this date, even though not all projects are created equal. Some are just quick experiments, whereas others can be considered "more serious work".

Looking forward to learning more, and also to hearing from you in case you have something to say!
